Veronika Swanepoel Olivier is a contemporary South African multi-disciplinary artist and a well-known innovator in textile sculpting techniques. A textile artist creates art using fabrics and processes like sewing, knitting and weaving but Veronika also incorporates many other sculpting and mixed media painting techniques in her creations. Veronika learned to sew at the age of five and developed a love for fabrics, not only the colours and patterns but also the textures of the different fibres used in textile manufacturing. As an artist she mainly worked with mixed mediums in painting and it wasn’t until much later that she found herself moving into textile art and sculpting.
Veronika’s interest in textile art came with a room filled with textiles collected over several years and the discovery of soft sculpting on social media. While she continued to paint she started to learn the art of textile sculpting and fabric manipulation.
Over the last 4 years, Veronika focused more on sculpting and her works became familiar and popular in the online communities. While her first works were fairly simple and traditional, she eventually started to experiment with different materials and processes using fabrics, fibres, metals, art mediums and paints and other recycled items, moving toward what would become her unique style of textile sculpting. Veronika is an innovator and a leading contemporary textile sculptor who has given workshops and exhibited work internationally. She also appeared on several South African TV programs and was published in the American Magazines, Where Women Crate and What Women Create.
In addition to being an artist, Veronika is also an entrepreneur who started a few businesses that sold for profit. She is currently also a Director of a local craft business she owns and manages with two of her friends. She also writes a monthly feature for the South African Artist Magazine and hosts free art and craft workshops on YouTube for a local art supply manufacturer. She is an avid recycler, loves cooking and binge watch animation films. She lives happily married with husband Willem and their three Royal Princess Poodles in a small country town South of Johannesburg.
